Injured Athlete Program

Learn the inner game of injury and recovery

A Plan for Success

The lives, and identities, of competitive athletes often revolve around their sport and their training. An injury can change everything, leaving an athlete feeling lost, scared, and unmotivated. Sometimes athletes try to “tough it out” but we see athletes who need a more holistic and effective approach. We dedicate ourselves to educating our athlete-clients on the psychological effects of injury, and provide expert support to help with the psychological struggles that often accompany the rehabilitation process.

Sports medicine doctors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, fitness coaches, athletes and parents have trusted us to teach the inner game of injury recovery.

Common concerns injured athletes may experience:

  • Isolation from others
  • Anger/Irritability
  • Change in relationship to food
  • Depression
  • Post-Concussive symptoms and effects
  • Persistent pain
  • Lack of motivation
  • Loss of identity
  • Family tension
  • Anxiety
  • Low confidence
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Fear of the return to sport
  • Fear of future
  • Reliance on alcohol/drugs

Our Approach

At Greenepsych, we understand that the rehabilitation process is like riding a roller coaster. There are moments when you are soaring, and then, other times, your upside down and you feel like you don’t know which way you are heading.

We focus on creating a strong relationship with our clients. Every client receives a personalized, “mental recovery training plan” that increases motivation, keeps an athlete’s eye on short-term, specific goals, and facilitates conversations around the use of mental skills (e.g., visualization, mindfulness meditation, journaling, emotional regulation) to help make progress over time and to enhance confidence.

Most athletes, that seek out our services need support navigating their recovery, including managing setbacks and emotional regulation, and handling fear, worry, and pain.

“Thank you Greenepsych! This is the most normal I’ve felt in two years. I feel competitive again.” Division 1 pitcher

Services

  • Individual Consultation

Think of the Greenepsych team as another part of your recovery team. We help you handle the mental hurdles as you move through the rehabilitation process.

We typically meet with clients for one-hour, or half-hour sessions and, depending on progress and goals, we will meet with clients weekly, bi-monthly or we will spread out the sessions even further.

We also offer an on-line, injured athlete support group.

Use the intake form below to get information on pricing and available session packages for individual consultation and/or the support group. At this time, we are only offering phone, video or walk-and-talk sessions in a local park, if desired.

  • Biofeedback

Every injured athlete knows what it’s like to feel stressed, and many know what it’s like to have pain that won’t remit. Biofeedback helps athletes understand what is happening in their bodies when they experience stress and/or pain. The awareness of how our bodies respond to stress is vitally important when learning how to reduce our physical stress and regain psychological balance.

Once we gain this awareness, we use proven techniques to gain better control over our automatic reactions and reduce our levels of stress and/or pain.

At Greenepsych, we use cutting edge technology, called HeartMath, with a focus on Heart Rate Variability to bring the body back to a balanced state.

The Benefits of Biofeedback also include:

  • Improved Physical Health
  • Reduced levels of pain
  • Increased sleep quality
  • Improved recovery time from concussion
  • Improved Mental Health
  • Decrease in Anxiety
  • Improved ability to pay attention
  • Increased emotional awareness
  • Improved Sport Performance
  • Less performance anxiety
